Herne Hill is an oasis, despite being located in Zone 2. The area is described as having a villagey feel, no doubt because of the fact that there is a Sunday market, several lovely parks, and a mix of residents who are all passionate about the neighbourhood. Families particularly appreciate the availability of period homes of various sizes and green spaces, while young professionals may be most keen about the commute options and proximity to Brixton's nightlife. Whatever draws you to Herne Hill, you are not likely to be disappointed.

Community

Herne Hill is an appealing suburb that is popular with both young professionals and families. There's a good range of local, independent businesses, a Sunday market, and many community hangouts - including parks - which help foster the sense of community here.

Safety

Herne Hill is a safe place to live, with an average crime rating from the Met police. However, neighbouring Brixton has above-average crime rate, and the 2014/2015 crime and violence against the person rates in Herne Hill ward were both slightly higher than the overall London rates. 

Parking

Parking is about average for London. The rate of car ownership is slightly low, at about one car for every two households. Road links are good without being obtrusive, as the area is nestled among major arteries like the South Circular and Brixton Hill but does not have one running through it.

Nightlife

There's a good range of pubs, bars, and restaurants in the neighbourhood - but it's worth noting that nearby Brixton is a nightlife hotspot, famous particularly for music venues, and is easily reached by a short bus ride.

Family Friendly

Herne Hill is known to be particularly popular with young families. It is a good place to look for a family home, with a good selection of period homes in varying sizes from standard terraces to larger semis, many of which have gardens. There is abundant green space in the area, with Herne Hill sandwiched between Brockwell Park, Ruskin Park, and Belair Park offering a range of play facilities, including a lido. The percentage of residents who are children aged 0-15 is similar to the London rate of 20%.

Herne Hill's property includes many homes that would be suitable for pets, ranging from more standard Victorian terraces to larger semi-detached homes, many with gardens. There is abundant green space in the area, with Herne Hill sandwiched between Brockwell Park, Ruskin Park, and Belair Park - offering many acres of walking trails and open space.

Transport

Despite not having a Tube station, Herne Hill is well-connected with two rail stations in Zone 2. Herne Hill station's trains go to Victoria, St Pancras, and Farringdon. North Dulwich is served by trains to London Bridge. Bus links are good, and offer a good connection to the Tube at Brixton, where commuters can get on the Victoria Line. Road links are good without being obtrusive, as the area is nestled among major arteries like the South Circular and Brixton Hill but does not have one running through it.
