Nunhead, South East London

Exceptional4.4

Living in

Nunhead is a prime example of a London village. It has a strong sense of community and a traditional high street, lined with shops like a butcher and a baker as well as local pubs surrounding the green. There is also good, affordable housing stock in this area, including Victorian terraces sought after by families looking for space and new-build flats, preferred by young professionals. Residents will have access to several rail operators as well as the Overground, making the commute relatively painless, and access to Peckham nightlife comes without having to sacrifice space or quiet.

Community

Nunhead has a villagey feel and its community revolves around a series of festivals throughout the year. There is a recently-regenerated village green, and local village shops like bakers and butchers as well as pubs surround it. People often rent here with plans to buy in the long-term.

Safety

Nunhead has an average crime rating from the Met police. The 2014/2015 crime rate was notably lower than the overall London crime rate, while the violence against the person rate was about the same.

Parking

Parking is generally not too troublesome in Nunhead. The rate of car ownership in this area is a little low for London, at one car for every two households. Road links, including the A2 and the A20, are good without running through the centre of the neighbourhood.

Nightlife

Nunhead has a good range of local pubs, as well as a few retaurants and bars. However, nearby Peckham is a nightlife destination, and can easily be reached from Nunhead - and transport links to Shoreditch via the Overground are also good.

Family Friendly

Nunhead Cemetary is a beautiful, if Gothic, place to walk. Schools in this area are generally good, including both state primaries and comprehensives that are rated 'good' or 'outstanding' by Ofsted. There are sought-after private schools in neighbouring Dulwich.

Pet Friendly

Nunhead has a good stock of Victorian terraces and semi-detached villas, alongside some post-war and modern flats - many of which would make suitable homes for pets. The neighbourhood also has abundant green and open space, including a village green, Peckham Rye Park and Common, Telegraph Hill Park, and Brenchley Gardens. Nunhead Cemetary is a beautiful, if Gothic, place to walk a dog.
