Shacklewell Area Guide

UK Area Guides

Shacklewell, East London

Average2.9

Living in

Shacklewell was once a defined village with a manor house, but is now a more nebulous part of Hackney. Located between Dalston and Stoke Newington, residents tend to identify with either of those locations, depending on whether their postcode is N16 (Stoke Newington) or E8 (Dalston), rather than saying they live in Shacklewell. The area does not have its own ward, either, dividing what would be Shacklewell amongst Stoke Newington Central, Dalston, and Hackney Downs wards. A significant chunk of the area, however, lies within Stoke Newington Central ward, and that is a useful reference point for understanding census data related to Shacklewell.

Community

Few people would identify themselves as living in Shacklewell - they would tend to split between saying they live in Dalston or Stoke Newington, both of which are areas with a strong sense of neighbourhood identity and loyalty.

Safety

The 2014/2015 crime rate and violence against the person rate were both a little higher than for London overall. Much of the area is considered by the Met police to have average crime, but the Dalston ward is a high-crime hotspot that includes areas that are either part of or immediate neighbours to Shacklewell.

Parking

This isn't an especially easy or inexpensive place to own a car, even for London. The rate of car ownership in this area is half that of London as a whole, with fewer than one car for every two households. Road links are fairly good, with easy access to the A10, but a considerable amount of congestion.

Nightlife

Shacklewell and the surrounding neighbourhoods, including Dalston, have an enormous amount of nightlife to choose from - including tamer pubs and restaurants as well as bars and nightclubs, many of which also feature live music. You'll always be within walking distance of a great night out.

Family Friendly

This area is not particularly thought of as being family-orientated, and the percentage of residents aged 0-15 is lower than in London as a whole. There is also limited green space in the area, though some can be found nearby, and the majority of accommodation is flats, rather than houses. Parts of the area have above-average crime.

Pet Friendly

Shacklewell doesn't have much green space itself, but is fairly near Clissold Park and Hackney Downs. Housing is mainly flats, but there are some houses. This would be a less good place to own a dog than many parts of London.

Transport

Dalston Kingsland, Dalston Junction, Canonbury, and Rectory Road are all on the Overground and in Zone 2. The area is well-served by local buses, and road links (including the A10) are good, if fairly congested.
