Silvertown Area Guide

Silvertown, East London

Fabulous3.3

Living in

A formerly isolated area, this waterfront part of East London now boasts pretty good transport links, thanks to the DLR extension. Silvertown used to be an indistrial district, though that is set to change. This area, like much of the borough, has also historically had high levels of deprivation, but change is underway. Regeneration, which includes improvements to the Royal Victoria Gardens, the Pier Parade, and the Pier Road Open Space, continues to have a positive impact on this area. Many new homes are being built in this area as well.

Community

Silvertown is home to a pretty well-established core population, but the number of residents has increased a lot in recent years. There are community events hosted in places like the Royal Victoria Gardens, which plans to include a football tournament for locals.

Safety

Silvertown and the wider surrounding area has average crime, according to the Met police. The 2014/2015 crime rate and violence against the person rate were both slightly lower than the overall London rates. The area's slightly rough reputation is not currently backed up by the figures.

Parking

Silvertown is a suburban area with about average parking conditions. The rate of car ownership in this area is fairly low, with about one car for every two households. Road links are not especially good, but there is a useful link to the North Circular. There can be considerable traffic congestion.

Nightlife

People tend to look elsewhere for shopping and socialising, including nightlife. Transport links are ok, to places like Canary Wharf with just a bit more going on - walking through the foot tunnel to Woolwich might do in a pinch.

Family Friendly

Much of this area's housing consists of flats and apartments, rather than houses. There are numerous parks, open spaces, and waterways in this area, including the Thames Barrier Park and the Royal Victoria Gardens. Many of these parks have been upgraded, as have play areas like the one for young children located near Roebourne Way. This area has a slightly lower percentage of children aged 0-15 than London as a whole.

Pet Friendly

This area benefits from a lot of waterways and parks. Much of the housing, however, consists of apartments and flats, which can be less suitable for pets.

Transport

Silvertown used to feel very isolated indeed, for Zone 3, but no longer - thanks to the DLR. King George V station is on the DLR, as are Pontoon Dock and the stop for London City Airport, which is quite literally on your doorstep. Cyprus, Beckton Park, and Royal Albert are also on the DLR. Just across the river, Woolwich Dockyard and Plumstead are served by Southeastern trains. The DLR meets the Jubilee Line fairly nearby at Canning Town. The area is fairly well served by buses. There's a free ferry crossing and foot tunnel to Woolwich on your doorstep. Road links to the North Circular are fairly good, but river crossings for vehicles are somewhat lacking in this area.
