Southfields, South West London

Exceptional4.4

Living in

Southfields is a residential, suburban area neighbouring Wimbledon Common. It is popular with families, and has a sense of community, and is a desirable place to live in its own right - not just because of its proximity to Wimbledon. Here you'll find abundant green and open space, larger Victorian terraces, and excellent schools. There are also a variety of options for commuters, including a District Line station and a mainline rail station nearby.

Community

Southfields is a residential enclave and has a villagey feel. People move here when they are upsizing from a flat to a family home, and, partially as a result of this, the area has staying power and a sense of community. There is a range of local, independently-owned businesses.

Safety

Southfields is a very safe place to live, with the neighbourhood and the wider surrounding area being rated by the Met police as having average crime. The 2014/2015 crime rate and violence against the person rate were both notably lower than the rates for London as a whole.

Parking

Parking is not a particular issue in this part of London. The rate of car ownership in Southfields is just slightly lower than the London rate. Road links - including the A3 and the South Circular - are fairly good, if often congested.

Nightlife

There is a selection of restaurants, pubs, and gastropubs in this area, and even more in neighbouring Wimbledon. Wimbledon also has several cocktail bars and lounges, but you'll likely have to look elsewhere for more raucous nightlife.

Family Friendly

Much of the housing in this area consists of larger Victorian terraces, many of which remain undivided family homes. Southfields also offers good access to green and open space, with King George's Park and the River Wandle to the east of the neighbourhood, and Wimbledon Common to the west, and many playing areas. Schools in this area are generally very good, and highly sought-after - including 'outstanding' options for primary, comprehensive, and state schools. There is a similar percentage of children aged 0-15 living in Southfields as in London as a whole - just slightly higher than 20%.

Pet Friendly

Southfields offers good access to green and open space, with King George's Park and the River Wandle to the east of the neighbourhood, and Wimbledon Common to the west. The range of housing available in this area includes many larger Victorian terraces that may be more suitable for pets. This would be a good place to own a pet. Horse riding is also available nearby, at Wimbledon Common.

Transport

Southfields is in Zone 3 and has its own Tube station, served by the Wimbledon branch of the District Line. Earlsfeid station has trains to Waterloo via Clapham Junction and Vauxhall. The area is well-served by local buses, and road links - including the A3 and the South Circular - are fairly good, if often congested. A high percentage of residents travel by bicycle to work.
