A large town in County Antrim, Carrickfergus is older than nearby Belfast, and was once larger and more prominent than the capital. At the town’s centre is the original walled town, but it has now grown and spread and is considered to be part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area. Carrickfergus boasts areas of natural beauty, including a picturesque coastline, and a Norman castle, as well as the 16th century stone walls surrounding the centre. Property is relatively affordable, and there is a good mix of residents from young professionals and families to the retired. The town its served by three railway stations as well as a local bus route, and there are regular commuter services to Belfast and Larne. For those interested in schools, note that the vast majority of the town is now Protestant, although there is an integrated primary school and an integrated college.
