Winchester Street, London SW1

Property description

Quietly located at the end of a mid-Victorian terrace in Pimlico, this engaging four-bedroom home was converted by the modernist architects Stout & Litchfield in 1970. It has more than 2,000 sq ft of internal accommodation over several levels, with open-plan spaces, terraces, and copious amounts of natural light.

Please note that the sale price for the property includes the freehold for the building.

The Architects

Stout and Litchfield were a practice known for their distinctive modern homes. Their most famous was arguably 'New House' (1963-4) in Shipton-Under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, which was featured in A Clockwork Orange and was an innovative design of five linked pavilions with rotational symmetry. The firm also created the listed riverside terraces at 50-56 Ferry Street on the Isle of Dogs in London.

Please see the History section below for more about the history of the building.

The Tour

With its own entrance on the side of the building, the front door opens into a generous hall with hanging space for coats, and stairs to the first floor.

There is a kitchen and dining room at the rear, with the original 1970s fittings. This leads in turn to a fantastic reception room and open study area, with excellent ceiling height and large windows on three sides. Two huge Victorian sashes at the front overlook a mature tree on Winchester Street. There is also a large roof terrace off the landing.

Stairs ascend to the second floor, which is the setting of two double bedrooms with built-in wardrobes as well as a separate bathroom. Up another half level is a study or single bedroom.

The top floor has two large rooms linked together by a full-height door; these could be used as separate bedrooms, or as the principal bedroom and dressing room. One has an en-suite bathroom, and the other has glazed sliding aluminium doors onto another terrace.

Outdoor Space

One large terraced area sits on the west-facing side of the building, with lovely views over the surrounding terraces and gardens. The top floor is also home to a second terrace and is a real suntrap in the summer months.

The Area

Winchester Street is positioned within the attractive ‘Pimlico Grid’. Pimlico is well-connected by public transport, offering easy access to central London’s many attractions.

Despite its central location, the area retains a tranquil village feel, with quiet streets lined by white stuccoed terraces and dotted with green spaces. Nearby, Wilton Road is renowned for its offering of independent restaurants, cafés, and shops. There are two established food markets nearby, in Tachbrook Street and Pimlico Farmers Market on Pimlico Square. The square is also famous for its variety of antiques and interiors shops and Belgravia more generally has many boutiqes and restaurants, and is only a 5-minute walk from Winchester Street.

The beautiful St George’s Square is a short walk away to the east. It leads onto the Pimlico Garden and the Shrubbery, a peaceful park overlooking the River Thames. Slightly further west is Ranelagh Gardens, an extensive 18th-century set of gardens and lawns, and home to the Chelsea Flower Show. Green Park and St James Park are also within easy access, with beautiful, ever-changing seasonal landscapes.

Battersea Park and the shops and restaurants of Battersea Power Station are just across the bridge. Tate Britain is a 20-minute walk away, with one of the country’s largest collections of British art from the last 500 years.

The street's central location brings many of the city's best state and private schools within easy walking distance.

There are outstanding transport links within close proximity: the Underground is available at Pimlico (Victoria Line) and Sloane Square (Circle and District Lines), and Victoria station offers mainline rail services including direct trains to Gatwick Airport.
