Upon entering the ancient woodland in which Mount Wood is a part, one is immediately aware of their presence within a historically rich landscape. The surrounding vistas of the Powys valleys and Shopshire hills further this feeling, and provide an incredible backdrop in which to enjoy moments of peace.Mature oaks dominate the canopy in association with occasional ash. The lower shrub layer contains a mix of hazel, birch, rowan and hawthorn. The woodland floor contains a diverse range of plants associated with ancient woodland including bluebells, wood anemone, cow-wheat and ferns.Mount Wood is truly a wildlife haven and provides a home for a wide variety of species from redstart, pied flycatcher, greater spotted woodpecker, bullfinch, nuthatch, pipistrelle bats, badgers and even polecats have been seen in the wood.As the new steward of this beautiful woodland, one also joins a wider community of passionate woodland custodians. There is plenty to get involved with if desired – most recently, a series of conservation projects have taken place in the adjacent woods with the aim to enhance and augment the rich ecology of the area.Our Forester's ThoughtsHarry says...
"Firstly, I would establish a base camp and seating area for overnight stays with friends and family – perhaps somewhere that takes advantage of the incredible views!
Then, on a more practical level I would start to thin areas within the tree canopy, opening up glades and rides. I would clear the areas of competing vegetation and encourage natural regeneration from the surrounding trees, as well as supplementing this with some enrichment planting.
By diversifying the age, class, and species composition of Mount Wood, this would increase resilience to climate change, pests, and disease whilst maximising the diversity of wildlife the woodland attracts and supports."
