The octagonal building was opened as a Baptist chapel in 1843 and was one of the first places of worship in an expanding Victorian Town. Funded by William Cross, a merchant who enjoyed to holiday in the town. The building was known locally as The Round Chapel and at some point transitioned into The Well House. The property was then taken over by The Essex Regiment and became known again locally, as The Drill Hall. As the years passed in 1960 it turned into a rifle range and more recently a snooker club, with an extension added for toilets and a second set of stairs to the first floor.
