Property description

Description
The package of assets at Stockbridge includes a lovely country house, a secondary cottage, stables and land assets.

The main house is of exposed natural stone, painted stone and brick exterior under a variable pitched slated roof: a lovely colourful Virginia Creeper is to the front of the house. Internally, the accommodation is generously proportioned and laid out over two principal levels, and throughout features the sensitive preservation of many period features, cornice work, arched fenestration and notably the Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson natural oak timber fireplaces with his signature mouse carvings and heritage ironmongery. The house is set amid sylvan gardens, to the rear of which is an all-weather tennis court surrounded and sheltered by tall conifers. A field to permanent pasture is to the western side of the house and provides opportunities for equine pursuits and/or hobby farming. A secondary cottage provides extended family or income production options, together with the detached stables and further detached garaging.

Situation
Stockbridge, it is a fine package of country house, secondary property, stables and land assets situated in a private woodland setting on the fringe of the popular and always sought after village of Symington in South Ayrshire.

Symington is a lovely conservation village. It is within Symington parish and lies close to the A77 road from Ayr to Glasgow. Its church, built in 1160, remains one of the finest examples of a Norman church in Scotland.

The name Symington is derived from its founder, a Norman Knight called Symon Loccard, or Lockhart, who was granted the barony of Symington from Walter Fitz Alan, the first Steward of Scotland in 1165.

The village of Symington is a close-knit farming community but is now home to many modern homes and families too. The village is catered for by The Wheatsheaf Inn, an 18th century coaching inn, which is now a very popular pub and busy restaurant.

Symington has some impressive mansion houses within its vicinity, Coodham, Dankeith, Townend and Rosemount, which were all once very grand, and have interesting histories.

The village has a local convenience store and a well provisioned midi sized Co-op.

Symington has a local primary school and secondary education is available in Prestwick. Wellington is the independent school in Ayr and some of the children of the district attend the independent schools in Glasgow.

Prestwick town (5 miles) offers an excellent range of shopping facilities, including main supermarkets and professional services. The town is also well catered for in respect of medical and health centres.

Prestwick has good local schooling at primary and secondary levels. Prestwick has an indoor swimming pool and one of the largest indoor bowling stadiums in Europe, as well as an excellent tennis and leisure club with indoor and outdoor courts.

Prestwick Bay is popular with dinghy sailors, wind and kite surfers. Troon marina provides a safe and sheltered basin together with associated chandlery services. The Main Street of Prestwick provides an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and bistros and a variety of independent boutique and artisan shops to browse. As with many parts of Scotland, one is never too far from a golf course and Stockbridge is certainly no exception. Historic Prestwick Golf Club and the Troon golf courses are just to the southwest.

Transport links in the area are excellent. A direct dual carriageway links to the M77 to Glasgow City Centre (approximately 26 miles to the northeast). Prestwick Airport is nearby where there are increasing domestic and international routes. Prestwick Airport train station is approximately 4.5 miles to the southwest of the property, with a regular 40-minute service to Glasgow’s central station.

Travel Directions
From Glasgow city centre proceed in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway, take the slip road to M77 signposted Kilmarnock & Prestwick Airport. Remain on the M77 for about 26 miles and take the exit slip from the M77 signposted Symington. Follow the road around and across the motorway turning right at the junction and onto Symington Road South. Once onto Symington Road South, turn immediate left into the entrance for Stockbridge. Proceed along the driveway which terminates at the front of the house."
