The traditional market town of Morpeth with its wide range of facilities is three miles to the northeast. The A1 is ten minutes away giving easy access from north and south. The woodland and access to it overlies part of the former Tranwell Airfield. Known as RAF Morpeth in WW2, it housed the No. 4 Air Gunnery School, with trainees flying to nearby Druridge Bay to practice live fire. Nature has convincingly reclaimed the area in the intervening years and apart from the taxiway which gives excellent access to the wood, little is now evident of its former use.Haws is a most elegant wood of tall slim silver birch stems punctuated with a few oak trees. We also noted quite a few oak seedlings regenerating on the forest floor along with a few young holly and hazel stems. The woodland floor is a mix of soft grasses, fern, bracken and mosses along with patches of blackberry and the occasional honeysuckle. Our visit also revealed an abundant display of seasonal fungi. The wood is served by a newly constructed substantial stone track capable of supporting timber extraction, but also readily accessible to 2WD vehicles. This leads to a layby on the northwest side of the wood enabling in-wood parking. The wider woodland supports a variety of raptors. On our visit we noted kestrels, buzzards, sparrowhawks and tawny owls, while the tree canopy supports a range of woodland songsters. With excellent access and easy terrain, this bright and airy woodland should prove easy to manage while offering interest aplenty. Our Forester'sThoughtsAlastair says..."I’d seek out and tube the oak seedlings to protect them from deer browsing. Over the coming years I’d then halo-thin around the emerging saplings to give them light and space to grow, as well as thinning the birch in about 5 years’ time.A few bird and bat boxes would be put up. BBQs in one of the glades on a summer’s eve would be a regular feature."Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
