The county capital, Haverfordwest, is a mere 15 minutes’ drive and the coast with its popular beaches such as Newgale, is less than 10 minutes away. The woodland is reached through a residential housing estate, and the access from the tarmac road to the edge of the woodland is included within the sale boundary (whilst allowing access for the owner of the adjacent field). The current owners have not used the woodland for a number of years, resulting in the entrance to the woodland being heavily overgrown and in need of work to open it up.The woodland is segmented into three sections, with historic earth banks naturally dividing it into two smaller pieces of roughly 3 acres each, and one larger piece of 5 acres. Large diameter oaks and sycamores can be found growing on the earth banks, a testament to the history of the area. The eastern half and the southwest corner are designated as Ancient Semi Natural Woodland (ASNW), proving that the woodland has been in existence for more than 400 years.Alder and willow can be found growing predominantly in the northwest with some mature oaks on the edges. The eastern side is made up mostly of a mixture of mature oak and sycamore, but also has a lovely variety of other species (such as hawthorn, holly, hazel, further alder and willow, and occasional beech). Sycamore dominates the southwest section with smatterings of beech and oak, and somewhat bizarrely, a small group of Scots pine, which may have come about through natural seed dispersion or been intentionally planted by a previous owner. There are some lovely specimens of oak, beech and sycamore throughout the woodland, some of which have grown incredibly large and have fantastic canopies. There are several small streams that run north to south - mostly in the western half of the woodland - resulting in this area being quite wet, with there being no set route for the water to track. This has led to the appearance of hemlock water-dropwort, along with other water loving plant species. The topography changes as you move south, where there is a natural channel for the water to follow, meaning there are some drier areas, ideal for camping and other woodland activities.Elsewhere in the woodland, you will find a myriad of other plant species, such as ferns, bramble, bluebells, dog’s mercury, cowslip and other common woodland flora commonly found in a ASNW. There are signs of woodland wildlife throughout, and these are guessed to be a variety of deer species, foxes and badgers (although no badger sett was noted). Birdsong created a beautiful backing track to our visit.Eastmoor Wood is a hidden gem, perfect for someone looking for a restoration project with potential to make an instant impact on an already beautiful, if a little wild, woodland. Our Forester'sThoughtsJude says..."Opening up the entrance and creating a small hardstanding to park a car or stack timber/store tools would be a top priority, perhaps even siting a small shed here for wet weather storage. The woodland has been unmanaged for a number of years so a light thin would improve the biodiversity, creating open spaces whilst generating a healthy amount of firewood (this could potentially be for commercial or private use). I would also look to create a few deeper channels for the streams to limit the wet areas and allow easier access across the woodland."Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
