The sweet smell of honeysuckle perfumes the air, and the jangling song of the skylark can be heard ascending through the canopy.Captains Wood is easy to navigate via a series of well-maintained footpaths and rides, it is mostly flat with some interesting dells and glades, clues to the rich history of people working this land. Access is on foot only, via a footpath in the north eastern corner of the wood. Our Forester'sThoughtsHarry says..."I would remove some of the holly in areas, and start to plant some suitable, shade tolerant trees to try and diversify the age class and species composition of this woodland and in turn create a more resilient ecosystem.Beech trees are ideal from an ecological perspective, supporting many relationships and providing important habitat; whilst producing some wonderful timber. I would, however, thin out some of the smaller beech trees and create some glades and open areas to encourage more light at the woodland floor – this would promote regeneration of herbs, plants, shrubs and trees."Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
