This unique habitat is a stronghold for nationally scarce species of wildflower and plants as well as a rich diversity of other woodland flora and fauna.The canopy is made up of mature oak and ash, with hornbeam, hazel, field maple and elm making up the shrub layer. At the woodland floor, spotted orchids, wood sorrel and dog’s mercury mix with bittercress and the rare thin-spiked wood sedge – a testament to the age and health of this woodland. Access is via a surfaced track up to the woodland entrance, which then leads into a soft track beyond. There is a real sense of community here, with neighbouring owners working together to carry out tasks as a collective, each connected by their shared desire to see the whole woodland thrive.Our Forester's ThoughtsHarry says..."I would establish a coppice rotation – cutting different areas on a rotational system to provision a range of micro habitats within the woodland. This would promote different light levels within the woodland and maximise the potential to support a range of ecological relationships – boosting the resilience and diversity of Acheson Wood.I would use the material from the coppice operations to build a small base camp and seating area within the wood.
