The property was built in 1873 by Frank Caws for the Backhouse family of Quaker bankers. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described Dukes House as a “country retreat in the Romantic-Gothic style”. Everyday access is via a door to the central hall with access to the living accommodation, a ground floor bedroom, WC and staircase to the upper floor.
