Property description

Twenty six miles from Glasgow and along The River Clyde, and a short ferry crossing from the mainland lies Dunoon , the doorway to the Highlands, often described as Scotland’s  ‘best kept secret.’ First and lasting impressions are of breath taking wonderment at the unspoilt, beautiful and dramatic landscapes created by nature.
Situated within The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Strone House is a historic and prestigious seven bedroom coastal villa built in the 1840’s for a Victorian Shipping Magnate. It enjoys one of the most sought after positions on The Cowal Peninsula, overlooking the converging waters of The Holy Loch, Loch Long and The Clyde Estuary.
A Category C listed building within 1.5 acres of well-maintained garden grounds, with outstanding views over the water, and north to the Arrochar Alps. Having been fully restored in 2018, inside and out, the house retains its charm of yesteryear and its historic grandeur.
The main residence spans three floors and has seven en suite bedrooms each named after a Scottish clan. The ground floor has a spectacular entrance from the stone steps leading into the main hallway, with an original full length stained glass window. A spacious lounge which runs the length of the villa has two fireplaces and dual aspect windows overlooking the loch at the front and the gardens and fountain to the side. The large Clive Christian kitchen has a range cooker and island unit with Belfast sink. Double doors lead to the dining room which can seat twenty persons comfortably.
An impressive stone staircase leads to the five luxurious bedrooms on the first floor. On the second floor are two extra-large bedrooms, both en suite, with views encompassing coast and country, to the front and rear.
In addition there is further self-contained accommodation over the original coach house. This comprises two double bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, bathroom, and conservatory dining room. The ground floor includes a games room/laundry/storage /garage and outdoor toilets.
The double patios are located in prime position with ample seating around a fire pit and make the best of the views to the loch. A children’s play area with swings, chutes, ropes and ladders, also features a magical pixie hut. The jewel in the crown of the garden is a huge Cork tree which is believed to be the only one this far north, and in addition is the European Tree of The Year. Underneath the Cork tree stand two life-size bronze stags which have become a well-known landmark.
The local village hosts a popular pub and restaurant. There is a thriving primary school, a challenging golf club, excellent sailing facilities, and water sports on The Holy Loch. The historic Kilmun church offers tours ncluding the mausoleum of the Dukes of Argyll.
Seven miles away, Dunoon has an attractive esplanade and is famous for its Victorian pier which lies beneath the Castle Mound and gardens which features a statue of Highland Mary, Rabbie Burns great love.
The Victorian main street has its quota of charity shops, bakers, butchers and candlestick makers, not forgetting two supermarkets and various pubs and restaurant and a swimming pool with flume. For art and culture lovers there is the recently refurbished Burgh Hall. Dunoon also boasts the cutest cinema in Scotland.
