Property description

Courtyard House stands in the far corner of the development and is the largest in size with fantastic architecture and charming features. The accommodation comprises: Entrance Hall, Shower Room, Lounge/Diner, Kitchen and Utility. To the first floor: four bedrooms, one with ensuite and a family bathroom.

History Of Stable Court - Originally known as Stable Court (now of course The Courtyard) there is extensive information online about the main house Castell Malgwyn (of which the Courtyard was once part).
The stable court lies to the north of the house, on low-lying ground next to the River Teifi. It is entered on its east side from the drive through large, square piers, about 3.5m high, of cut Cilgerran stone. They are topped by large ball finials on curving plinths and are flanked by walls sloping down to lower piers about 1.2m high. The main piers are set at a slight angle to the drive and stable court, perhaps indicating a different original alignment of the drives. To the south a low wall curves round from the outer pier and continues as the east parapet of the lower bridge. The former stables and coach houses are ranged around a large square court of single storey Cilgerran stone buildings with pitched slate roofs. In the centre of the east side is an imposing entrance tower with a high round-arched entrance, upper storey room, stepped gables with stone clock faces in the centre of both outer and inner sides, and a tall octagonal cupola on top with an octagonal dome supported on round, wooden arches.

History - In the north-west corner of the court is a plain, two-storey building with a flat parapet hiding the roof. In its north-east corner is a taller, octagonal dovecote with a curving slate roof topped by a ball finial. Between the stone corner piers are slate panels with triangular openings. The stables and coach houses have been converted into holiday accommodation but double doors remain on the north (three), south (one) and west (one) sides. The interior has been gravel surfaced.
The stable court was part of the improvement programme of Abel Lewes Gower. It was built in 1844-45, designed by the London architect Ambrose Poynter. He also designed the lodge and entrance piers, which were built at the same time.

Situation - The Courtyard boasts a majestic location found off the shared entrance to Castell Malgwyn (now renamed Hammet House). It stands alongside the River Teifi and enjoys fine views over the river and picturesque surrounding woodland landscape, as well as having direct access out onto the river public footpath. The village of Llechryd has a good range of local amenities for basic every day needs, whilst the larger town of Cardigan is only a few miles further afield and provides a wide range of amenities, services and facilities, including a lottery funded redeveloped Castle, activities such as river boating, shopping and many cafes and places to eat. The River Teifi is a famous salmon fishing river as well as a natural beauty hot spot for walks and leisure pursuits. Within a few miles journey of Llechryd is a spectacular North Pembrokeshire & Ceredigon coastline, a major visitor destination with a wealth of beaches, coves and cliff top walks to be enjoyed, as well as boating, dolphin watching and water sports. The area is easily accessible, having good road links to Carmarthen, which is roughly 40 minutes drive away from where dual carriageway links connect on to the M4, as well as rail link with regular trains to Swansea, Cardiff and beyond.

The Courtyard - This is accessed under the imposing clock tower via a arched double gated entrance which leads to the inner communal garden area/courtyard from where access to each individual cottage is obtained.

Managers Notes - Clocktower Cottage - The cottage flooded in 2018. Since then the Environment Agency have fitted British standard Kite-mark approved flood barriers to both the main archway entrance to the Courtyard and the entrance doorway to Clocktower cottage. In addition to this, the cottage has been fitted with two automatic "sumps and pumps" to instantly remove any water ingress and pump this out (although this precaution has never been required). Further more, all the electrics have been re-done and discreetly set at a higher level, the oil boiler is wall mounted, the kitchen carcasses are made from a bespoke flood proof heavy duty PVC (not MDP) and the doors are all solid wood. The ovens are set within tall units, as is the fridge. The cottage has never flooded since.
