Property description

IMPRESSIVE TWO STOREY APARTMENT IN GRADE I LISTED CASTLE

Original Features • 3 Bedrooms • Drawing Room • Family Room on Mezzanine Level • Kitchen • Bathroom • Shower Room • Garage & Parking • Extensive Communal Parkland Grounds • Stunning Views • Excellent Broadband Coverage

Callaly Castle was first created as a Tower House in the 14th century with extensive additions in the 1670’s by the Clavering family and again in the 1820’s and 1890’s ultimately resulting in the creation of what is described by Pevsner as “one of the most interesting and varied houses in Northumberland” and meriting a Grade I listing. In the late 20th century the property was sensitively sub-divided into 4 principal wings, houses, garden cottages and apartments.

1 Park Wing which was built around 1890 retains a number of period features including sash case windows with working shutters, high curved ceilings and cornicing.

Entrance to this handsome property is at garden level leading directly into a warm and welcoming hallway with fitted book shelving. There are three bedrooms at this level all of which have fitted storage. There is also a contemporary bathroom with underfloor heating. A staircase leads to the first floor opening into an opulent drawing room with a fitted Clearview wood burning stove, dining area, and five windows allowing an abundance of natural daylight. Beyond lies a fitted kitchen with stylish floor and wall storage, integrated fridge, freezer, dishwasher and wine fridge. There is also a wall mounted oven, grill and hob. A further staircase leads to a stylish mezzanine area which is utilised as a family room with study space. The shower room with WC and wash hand basin completes the internal accommodation.

The property shares with other residents of the castle internal access to the Callaly Museum. This lofty area with atrium above has a vast array of intriguing architectural features and offers an excellent communal facility for social gatherings and other uses.

Externally
Well-kept lawns surround the building to the south and west. A garage is provided, together with external parking. The secluded parkland grounds extend to approximately 35 acres and are shared by all occupants of the castle. Gentle sloping lawns, including a croquet lawn, surround the castle on all sides with a backdrop of mature woodland. The woodland to the east offers meandering footpaths alongside a series of three small lakes which provide a most tranquil and attractive setting. The formal kitchen and herb garden lies to the north, and an access road, approached through stone gate piers, passes the lodge house to the south and carries on through to a further exit to the north.

Services
The property is connected to mains electricity and there is a shared private drainage system. Water is via a private estate supply. Heating and domestic hot water are by means of electricity.

Directions
From the A697 take the turning west towards Whittingham. On entering the village take the first turning to the left towards Callaly. After about 2 miles turn right into the grounds of Callaly Castle between the stone gate piers. Drive past the castle and turn immediately right. Through a stone arch parking is beyond the garages. The entrance to 1 Park Wing is directly in front of you with your back to the garage.

Notes
The property is Grade I listed so no EPC is available.
All curtains are included in the sale.
