The town was originally one of the major stops on the coaching routes in the 18th and 19th centuries and features a number of interesting buildings. The larger towns of Hertford, Ware, Royston, Bishop's Stortford and Stevenage are all within approximately 15 miles radius and all have stations with rail services into London.
