The History Of Rock House
Rock House, which is listed Grade II, began life in the 18th century, probably built as a farmhouse on the Bridgewater Estate. Whilst it appears on a number of estate maps in the 1700's, the first visual record of Rock House occurs in one of John Claude Nattes' drawings of Worsley in 1807. Although only a small part of the building is visible, it appears to have been a two storey, single depth structure. In the early 19th century, the house was largely rebuilt and doubled in depth to become a Regency style residence. This greatly enlarged building is shown on the back of a ticket issued in 1851 for the visit of Queen Victoria. In 1861, the tenancy was taken over by the family of Thomas Tyrer Smith who worked for Bridgewater Estates as variously a cash auditor, an estates' clerk auditor and a commercial clerk. It was here that he wrote, and from where he sold copies of, "The Bridgewater Waltz", perhaps composed to mark the end of the Bridgewater Trust in 1903. Throughout this period the property was part of the Bridgewater Estate, and was only sold to a private buyer in 1946.The current owner has lived in the house since 1984 and has carried out a programme of repair, restoration and improvement whilst retaining the original features, including the 18th century cellar. Improvements have included reclaiming the kitchen which had been converted to a garage sometime in the 20th century, installation of secondary glazing, construction of the terrace alongside the Bridgewater canal and creation of the driveway entrance to Barton Road.
